Black Skimmers are striking coastal birds commonly found loafing and feeding along East Beach in Galveston. They feed by flying low over calm water, slicing the surface with an elongated lower mandible to catch small fish. This unusual bill adaptation allows efficient foraging at dusk and dawn when fish are near the surface. Their eyes are vertically slit, which improves vision in bright glare and low light conditions. Black Skimmers range along the Gulf Coast, Atlantic Coast, Caribbean, and parts of Central and South America. On Texas beaches, they favor sandy shorelines, tidal flats, and quiet bays for feeding and resting.
