This grassland bird usually makes a stop on the way through to wintering grounds south of here. We don't typically get to see the full "horns" as most birds have lost their breeding colors by the time they get here. These are hardy little birds spending winters sometimes on the open plains in sub zero temperatures. This was taken on Blackie Spit in Crescent Beach where there is an Important Bird Area which is maintained for our feathered friends not only for migration, but summering and wintering habitat. This is all because of the rare sand dunes that make up most of area.
