Long-tailed Duck - Sandheads, BC
There is no question why this bird has its name! These very pretty and distinctive ducks have wonderful plumage in the summer and winter. This bird is just in from the north where it breeds and is already in its winter colors in November. The summer plumage the birds carry on the tundra in their breeding range is very different, with a comparison here. This was shot during the Important Bird Area Count for the Fraser River Delta in the Salish Sea.
