Tropical Kingbird - Tamarindo, CR
This Tropical Kingbird (Tyrannus melancholicus) was seen from the upper patio of the Zulu Surf Hotel in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. The bird would make short flights using the exposed perches to hunt insects. This species can be identified by its bright yellow belly, gray head, heavier bill, and deeply notched tail. This tail helps separate it from some other Tyrannus kingbirds. Although it resembles Couch's Kingbird, they are often found in more open habitats. Furthermore, they are best distinguished by their vocalizations. Close views reveal stiff, whisker-like feathers around the base of the bill called rictal bristles. These specialized feathers help protect the eyes. In addition, they aid in detecting and guiding flying insects into the mouth. The Tropical Kingbird is one of the most widespread flycatchers in the Americas. It remains a familiar sight for birders exploring tropical regions around the world.
