This was by far the most common kingfisher we saw in Thailand during our trip. They are large kingfisher that are very conspicuous with their blue wings and tail. They do catch fish but are also found away from water hunting reptiles, amphibians, rodents and even other birds. The world has a staggering 117 species of kingfisher including Australia's Laughing Kookaburra. Most of them are brightly colored and live in the tropics. Here in North America, our most common bird is the Belted Kingfisher.
