California Gull - Esquimalt Lagoon, BC A winter phase California Gull at the Esquimalt Lagoon. Most of the wintering gulls on the Pacific Coast with white heads get some semblance of darker feathers mixed in. This gull is easy to identify at close range with the black primaries and the red and black, bi-colored spots on the bill. This gulls are slightly smaller than the more common Glacuous-winged Gulls and are usually only found here on the coast in the winter months.
