Wrens

Rock Wren - Centennial Beach, BC We will get a few of these birds in the dry grasslands of the inland valleys of Southern British Columbia but they rarely come to the coast. Our visitor this year picked a beach full of logs to pick through down at Boundary Bay, very close to the border of Point Roberts and Delta meet. Rock Wrens have been known to

Rock Wren - Haynes' Lease Ecological Reserve, BC This songster was loudly singing along the bottom of the rock cliffs in Haynes Lease Ecological Reserve. He was a little light on tail feathers, but that didn't seem to bother his voice one bit as he sang almost the entire time we were there. Rock Wrens are only found in a few remote places in British Columbia and one area is the only desert in Canada just north of the USA border around Osoyoos Lake. This wonderful little area is also the only place to regularly find other dry climate birds like Western Bluebirds, Common Poorwills, White-throated Swifts and Yellow-breasted Chats. Rufous-naped Wren - San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua There were three Rufous-naped wrens that were constantly making trips to the balcony at Casa Serena. It took a couple trips to figure out they were building a nest in the palm just off the deck. There were a couple times they showed up with what looked like the tops of grass stems and separately roots. It is not uncommon for wrens to build multiple nests and even have multiple family roost together in these nests. Michael W Klotz - www.TheBirdBlogger.com

Pacific Wren - West Vancouver, BC - This very inconspicuous little bird rarely sits still for very long and rarely out from the dense cover. It is also rare that you see snow in this part of the world for very long so the white back ground with our little year round songster is a treat. I find it amazing that they dont freeze when it gets below freezing but here they stay. This was taken on the trail at Klootchman Park, West Vancouver.

We have an unusual visitor to the coast this winter in the form of a wren. These dry loving wrens are usually found east of the coast range in the Okanagan Valley here in BC and Eastern Washington. This bird has made a temporary home on the south facing dykes of Brunswick Point gleaning insects from the logs and rocks.
