Chickadees

Black-capped Chickadee - Bebo Grove, AB In a little copse of White Spruce trees in the southern section of Calgary, Alberta is a park that runs along Fish Creek. In that park there are several spots to visit including historic Bebo Grove which is listed as one of the top spots for birding. During our visit we came across several winter species including White-breasted and Red-breasted Nuthatch, several woodpeckers, Mountain and Boreal Chickadee and these wonderful Black-capped chickadees. It was -15C while we were there and these little guys didn't mind at all. Michael W Klotz 2021 - www.TheBirdBlogger.com

Boreal Chickadee - Bebo Grove, AB It was a treat to see this far north chickadee up close just inside Calgary city limits in a park that runs either side of Fish Trap Creek. There was a mixed flock made up of Black-capped and Mountain Chickadees, Red-breasted and White-breasted Nuthatches and a couple of Hairy and Downy woodpeckers in there for good measure. As their name suggests, these birds live in the northern forests of Canada and Alaska year round and coming only slightly south in their range when the weather is particularly nasty. Mountain Chickadee - Garden of the Gods, CO One of the 2 species of chickadees that you can find in Colorado. This little guy with the white racing stripe along the eyebrow is a Mountain Chickadee. You usually can hear them before you see them with a very thin and weak sounding chickadee call. They are very hardy bird spending winters in the mountains with the snow, hunting among the crevices for insects tucked away for the winter. The also spend some time gobbling up seeds that their friendly neighborhood bird watchers leave out. Michael W Klotz - www.TheBirdBlogger.com

Black-capped Chickadee - Vancouver, BC Our most common chickadee in Vancouver's Stanley Park, this masked bandit was bouncing around the marshy area across the path from Lost Lagoon. He was curious as to what I was doing and the only reason I was able to get a shot of these very active birds. Michael W Klotz - www.TheBirdBlogger.com

It was -1F/-18C when I ran into a group of small birds making their way through the pine and fir above Kamloops. It was a mixed flock of Black-capped Chickadee, mountain Chickadee, Brown Creeper and Red-breasted Nuthatch. I find it amazing that these tiny little birds can survive the major sub 0 temps with a limited source of food. From what I have researched, to make sure they dont freeze overnight, the enitre flock finds a woodpecker hole and piles in on top of each other and vibrate all night to make sure they don't freeze.
